Recommendation

Mis Match Recommendation

I really did enjoy the book Mis Match. I liked about it was the Japanese and the Chinese culture. Since I hosted a Japanese foreign exchange student, I liked the differences from America to Japan. It was cool to see what was so different between the two cultures. Just because Andy’s heritage was Japanese, didn’t mean that Japan was like going home to him. He actually thought it was very different. Another feature was it more of a romance book, so if you like romance then you would most likely enjoy it. It had an easy love surrounded by many complications. If you’re a boy you probably wouldn’t like the book. Even though it’s from a girl and guys point of view. If you’re a girl, you most likely like it. The fight for love was sweet. I wouldn’t say it’s that mushy though. To me Andy and Sue’s families had high standards that they both needed to meet. Like Grandma Mei always asked if she did her writing. Sue was expected to do hours of Chinese writing, but sometimes she got away without doing it. Her family is expected to do lots of kitchen help. In my house that would never happen. Andy did know some Japanese, but he thought it was never enough to talk fluent. To me, learning a foreign language would be fun. I would never like to be forced to do it though. Just learn when I please. If you are interested in different cultures, this book has a good amount of it. Mis Match doesn’t over do it, because if it did, nobody would understand the book. That’s one of the things that make this book unique. In one of the parts of the book I didn’t like though, but this had nothing to do with the author. When Andy tried to win Haruko’s respect, I thought he should just stop trying, why would it matter? He kept going on and on about it. I was starting to think he liked her, and was cheating on Sue. It turns out he never wanted to give up the fight for something, no matter how hard and impossible it was. I think that should be my motto now. Overall I loved the book; I would defiantly recommend that you should read it.

Conflict

Conflict

The story, Mis Match had one main conflict. It starts with out with the problem with Sue and Andy. Andy wants to go out with Sue, but Sue knows she shouldn’t disobey her grandmother. Her grandmother has a strict hatred for the Japanese. She would not be pleased I f she knew that Sue liked a Japanese boy. Sue still agrees to go out with Andy though. Sue thinks that she can just keep it a secret love, that doesn’t go over to well. She goes on dates with Andy, and nobody finds out anything. Rochelle is a little suspicious when Andy shows up at the front door to talk to Sue. Sue still manages to keep it a little longer. When Sue and Andy arrive at the airport they’re families both stop at the café for a snack. Grandma Mei was there too. Grandma Mei walks over to talk to the Suzuki’s. She starts chatting with them; Grandma Mei finds out that their son, Andy is dating her favorite granddaughter, Sue. Grandma Mei is outraged with lies she has been hearing for the past months. She just couldn’t believe her favorite grandchild would do something like that to her. The whole point of why Sue kept the secret was, because Grandma Mei trusted Sue very much, and she knew she would let Grandma Mei down if she found out. When Sue gets back from Japan, she feels guilty for deceiving Grandma Mei. When she arrives home she helps her mother make a fancy dinner in honor of Grandma Mei, to try to get her to accept Sue forgiveness. Sue then finds out Andy is coming over to introduce himself Grandma Mei as Sue’s boyfriend. All Sue thinks is, how could it get anymore awkward?
Resolved- Andy show up with a beautiful glass doll, one that Grandma Mei would have loved to owned. Andy presents the present to Grandma Mei. Grandma Mei is very touched by the gift. Grandma Mei accepts the peace offering. She then decides that Andy had nothing to do with the breaking of her favorite doll, Andy wasn’t even born yet. Grandma Mei cries of joy, because now she has her doll back. Grandma Mei decides that Andy is allowed to see Sue, and they have her permission too.

Character 1
Through out the story we can see the thoughts of two different people.
Sue is the character that starts the story. Her full name is Suzanne Hua, but she goes by the nickname Sue. Sue is 15 years old and is in 10th grade. She just moved with her parents to China Town. Sue’s ancestors are from China, and so is her grandmother. Her grandmother lived in China, but when the Japanese attacked they moved to the United States of America. Sue has a sister named, Rochelle. Rochelle is a senior. Sue plays viola in the schools orchestra. She is starting school at Lakeview High School. Sue has never really had a boyfriend until now. When Sue walks right into the auditorium, she already new she liked Andy. Sue finds Andy funny and cute. She really enjoys hanging out with Andy at Hero’s. Sue knows she shouldn’t waist her time with Andy, because her parents would not approve of him. Sue then decides that it shouldn’t matter who she dates, that’s it’s her choice, not her parents. Sue always loved when Grandma Mei came over. Grandma Mei would tell many stories about her childhood. Sue didn’t like the story of how Grandma Mei was hiding behind the stove with her family. Grandma Mei’s doll was destroyed by the Japanese. Now Grandma Mei always hated the Japanese. Even with the stories, Sue loved Grandma. Grandma Mei thought Sue was the best out of the grandchildren, because Sue showed much respect for Grandma Mei. Sue likes to help her mom in the kitchen. She used to be really close to Rochelle, but now she doesn’t tell her much of anything anymore. Sue feels really guilty that she keeps the secret about Andy from her sister. Sue was very surprised when Andy came to her door fundraising for the trip to Japan. Sue almost got caught by her sister then. Sue’s mom is very good at Chinese ink paintings. When Mr. Suzuki bought one of Sue’s mother’s paintings, she knew it was all down hill for her. When in Japan, Sue is worried that Andy was falling in love with one of the host family’s daughter, Haruko. Sue didn’t want to compete with that. Later on, Sue finds out that Andy was just trying to make Haruko earn respect for him. Sue was happy the she misunderstood. Sue is much relived when Grandma Mei finally likes Andy
Character 2
Andy is the character that comes right after Sue. Andy is Japanese American. His ancestors came from Japan. His full name is Andy Suzuki. Andy is in the 10th grade, just like Sue. He has an older brother named Tom. Andy is a violinist in the school’s orchestra. His parents are very strict. He was in many orchestra camps and practices. His parents want him to do well in school, orchestra helps balance his time. When Andy saw Sue, he knew he wanted to be with her. So Andy decided to invite Sue to go to Hero’s with him. Sue accepts. Andy tries to talk Sue into a movie on Friday, but Sue says she can’t. She tells him why. Andy is so mad at her. Just because he was Japanese American, and she was Chinese American, didn’t mean that they couldn’t be together. Andy tries really hard to get Sue to come with him on a date. He thinks Sue is just being silly. Later that night, Andy asks his dad if he liked Chinese people, his father said he hated them so much. Now Andy understands why Sue is so scared, because if they got caught they would be in big trouble. When Andy’s father bought one of Sue’s mother’s paintings, he could she a truce in his father’s eyes. Andy knew he would end up with Sue, he just knew it. Andy loves the violin. He enjoys playing in the orchestra. Nobody knows this about him, because he seems so calm. He gets extremely nervous when he plays a solo. He loves playing, but that is one of his fears. Andy was sure hoping for the trip to Japan. He was a little rusty on his Japanese, but he hoped to speak fluent Japanese by the time they went. Everybody kept saying that going to Japan was like going home for Andy. When Andy got there it was nothing like home. He didn’t even feel related to it. He tried speaking fluent Japanese, every time he said something; the host family would be pleased, until he did the wrong action. The host family’s daughter Haruko was not pleased with Andy. She wanted a real American, not a Japanese American. She did not show any respect to Andy. Andy knew somehow he would earn her respect, but he didn’t know how. At the end, he saves her from a very scary man, and she shows her gratitude for his braveness. When home, Andy was invited to dinner at the Hua’s house. He wanted to give Grandma Mei something nice to make up for the accident. Grandma Mei now gives Andy respect. Now he can date Sue without any problems.

The setting starts out at the Orchestra addition. That’s the first time that Andy and Sue meet. After a week they started to go to the sandwich shop, Hero’s. When Sue would past through the school hallways Ginny would always say something like, “You two where made for each other.” Sue would often wait for the bus with Mia after school. At Sue’s home they would eat a sit down dinner. The orchestra students spent a lot of time in the auditorium practicing, they really wanted to be good enough to go to Japan. The school held an auction at the school auditorium to help raise money for the future trip to Japan. At the auction, Andy’s dad bought one of Sue’s mom’s paintings. It sold for one hundred dollars. Later that night, Andy’s family figured out it’s a Chinese painting not a Japanese one. , It turns out that they raised enough money to go to Japan. Everybody is very excited so they practice for many hours, after school in the auditorium. In a couple weeks they go to Japan. Sue’s whole family came to the airport, even Rochelle and Grandma Mei. When stopping at the local café, Grandma Mei runs into the Suzuki’s. Grandma then learns about Sue’s and Andy’s big secret. Sue, Andy, and the orchestra students fly to Japan. When in Japan they are assigned to a host family. Andy and Sue’s host family takes them different places. Their host families drop them off in the afternoons to practice for the big concert. In ways that relate to my life: The way that Andy shows his love for Sue is like the way I show love for my dog, Torri.

Memoir

I remember when I was 11, and I went to waterpark of America. When I walked in, and the smell of clorine splashed right in my face. I walked over to the right, and there was this glass wall when you looked through the glass. The first thing i notice is the supper huge waterslides! I went swimming all afternoon. The feeling of going down the slides was this rush of excitment everytime. When I'd go down the slides I'd think, "how can it get better then this?"
I was wrong, At the end of the green slides i hit my head and got a bruise the size of a tomato. After I was done i was very thristy. Later that night I found a luguage cart and rode on it all the way to my room.
